THE DESIGN STORY

The Hercules knot is an ancient symbol with multiple meanings, most notably undying love and marriage commitment, symbolised by the belief that it was the knot on a bride's girdle that only her groom could untie. The ends of the knot were binded, and as such were unable to separate.

This knot, also known as the Hercules knot, is a common motif in Greek and Roman art. It also represents strength, protection, and unity, due to its association with the legendary hero Heracles (Hercules) and its use as a protective amulet against evil spirits and to cure wounds. The phrase "tying the knot" likely originates from this wedding custom.

Goddess Aphrodite was said to be tying her hair in a Hercules Knot, and goddess Artemis would tie her clothing using the knot. In ancient Greek art, the knot was believed to have healing properties, and it’s continuous use throughout the millennia signifies the real belief of this.
