Notes of Curiosity: Momina Watton
Momina Watton is the founder and creative director of Atelier 278. Through her work with pure travertine and marble, Momina seeks to bring artistry and craftsmanship to interior spaces. Each creation is sculpted locally by British stonemasons. We spoke with Momina to gather her insights on sculpture, craftsmanship, and inspirations.
01 WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO CREATE?
Knowing that our pieces will live on and hopefully be appreciated by future generations even when I’m long gone.
02 WHERE DO YOU FIND BEAUTY IN YOUR EVERYDAY LIFE?
Nature – crisp walks in Holland Park as the leaves change as well as the mesmerising natural stone that I get to work with daily.
03 TELL US ABOUT A PLACE THAT INSPIRES YOU
Ett Hem in Stockholm…a boutique hotel that feels like you’re staying over at your chicest friend’s house. They’ve perfected unstuffy luxury.
04 YOUR FAVOURITE SCULPTOR
Massimiliano Pelletti who uses natural stones such as Onyx, Quartz and Travertine, that aren’t traditionally used in sculpture. His work is truly ethereal.
05 AN HEIRLOOM THAT IS MEANINGFUL TO YOU
My mother’s tennis bracelet that she wore when I was growing up. It’s infused with her love.
06 WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR IN CRAFTSMANSHIP?
Attention to detail of course, but also a story told through an individual’s craft. All of our tables are hand crafted by our stonemasons here in the UK and I know each of them by name.
07 YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF YOUR JOB
When customers share photos of them using their table that we’ve created especially for them. It pleases me to think that memories are being made around our tables.
08 WHAT DOES GIFTING SIGNIFY TO YOU?
Thoughtfulness. The idea that you listened and took time to consider what someone might like. Gift giving truly is my love language.
