Roses have always inspired us, they always grew in our gardens and always are exchanged in special events.
Historically as well flowers have traditionally been associated with certain goddesses. In ancient Greece and Rome, these were Aphrodite (Roman Venus), Persephone (Proserpina), and Chloris (Flora), who were often offered as signs of respect to these goddesses.
In particular for Aphrodite, roses were mostly connected to her. During festive occasions, wreaths and garlands of flowers and greenery were traditionally worn by both men and women, and "mark the wearers as celebrants, and serve as an expression of the beauty and brevity of life itself".
Garlands of roses and violets, adorn erotic scenes, bridal processions, and drinking parties in Greek lyric poetry from the Archaic period onward. We are particularly inspired by mostly Lawrence Alma-Tadema, but also other Romantic artists of his period - who created paintings of magnificent scenes covered in roses.
